Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle was a famous American author/writer and illustrator, he as well known as the father children’s book illustrator, because unlike others he wrote and illustrated his own children’s books. The Editors of Encyclopaedia state that “His magazine and book illustrations are among the finest of the turn-of-the-century period in the Art Nouveau style”. He was not so experienced in using printers and color; therefore most of his illustrations were fairly detailed and, black and white. His illustrations were well designed for children, however he had more text on pages that the illustration he made single-page illustrations that supplemented a long text rather than double page drawing. I would say this helped the children to read more and they would read in order to get to the next illustration, “the less you get, the more you want it”.

Pyle grew up in a wonderful home, one would actually it was perfect. He lived with his family in a stone house with a garden in the backyard filled with flowers. His mother who was an enjoyed art and reading influenced Pyle into the industry of making children’s books. His parents supported his work. He was surrounded by people who made him happy; therefore he wanted kids to experience what he experienced, happiness.

Howard’s style is more of a woodcut art, where the drawing/illustrations consist of lines in order to make a form of a shape. Woodcut works phenomenal when it is black and white, so the black and white designs worked for him. The Story of King Arthur and His Knights is one of his famous book, it was produced in 1902.

Pyle design/illustration style is accommodating. It works well with the whole layout of the book. According to Erica “Howard Pyle was a marvellous illustrator”, I agree with this statement, he took time and energy to make the illustrations and make sure each and every line was perfect.

Mick Inkpen

Mick Inkpen is British author and illustrator who studied graphic designing in college. His characters that he designs, includes, pigs, mice, sleepy bears, playful puppies are known as Kippers, he won an award for them “my entire career has been a balance between the excitement of the completely blank page, which is what I enjoy most, and producing books around a character that I can build up over a number of years. And Kipper was the response to that”. Mick Inkpen was born in Romford, he grew up in a “very suburban estate with white concrete roads ”

His illustrations are delicate and light but yet powerfully unique. The designs are practically line drawing with a color which adds depth to them. His illustrations are “cute” they know how their target markets react to the products. He has really soft and cuddly animals as characters which most mothers would buy for their children, relating to their femininity, for liking delicate and cuddle apparatus.

His designs also shows emotions which children admire, instead of something just sitting still, his illustrations, show action and movement that happens in the story, his pictures speak.

His designs are appealing to me because of how he uses color in order to make his illustration come alive. And it also teaches children about kindness, there’s a soft and delicate side into his drawing instead of putting a bloody dog, which would represent violence. He also uses playful fonts, to make the children feel comfortable.
